A Psalm of Thanksgiving

Psalm 124 is another of the Songs of Ascents that was most-likely arranged during the post-exilic period. It’s a reflection on God’s faithfulness in preserving His people through repeated dangers. The contempt and ridicule mentioned in Psalm 123 has now been mixed with anger and become open hostility. 

The psalm isn’t about how God has kept His people from difficulty, but how He has kept them in difficulty. The hazards they (and we) endure are only the setting that comes from the help. Although it speaks about the hazards of life the focus is on the help that comes from the “name of the LORD…”
